Leostream P2V Direct

The No Reboot P2V for VMware and Microsoft; Leostream Physical to Virtual (P>V) Direct conversion system is a highly automated tool that converts a Windows OS based system running on a physical server into an identical system running on virtual hardware without the need for CDs, floppies, additional drivers, or a system reboot.


Leostream P2V System ComponentsThe new Leostream Physical to Virtual (P>V) Direct conversion system is a highly automated tool that converts a Windows OS based system running on a physical server into an identical system running on virtual hardware without the need for CDs, floppies, additional drivers, or a system reboot.

The product is designed to be highly automated and usable without significant training.

The Windows systems supported are NT4 SP6a, 2000 (all service packs), XP (all service packs), and Windows 2003 Server.

The virtual machine layers supported are VMware Workstation 5.5, GSX 3.1 for Windows and ESX 2.5, as well as Microsoft Virtual Server 2005.

The P>V Conversion system consists of two components; the P>V Wizard that is installed on the physical machine, and the Host Agent that is installed on the host machine running the virtualization software.

Stored conversion parameters and command line automation - Allows the P>V Wizard to be run from the GUI orcommand line with stored parameters.  Hence Windows Scheduling can be used to schedule conversions.

Partition resizing for VMware ESX, GSX, and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 - Allows virtual server partitions to be resized.

Disk resizing for VMware ESXand Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 - For VMware ESX the disk space allocated to that virtual server is reduced in order to eliminate most of the unpartitioned space.

For Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 the dynamic disk is compressed so that unused space on the virtual disk does not require real space on the physical hard drive.

Disk partition management configuration - Allows the remote configuration of the virtual server’s network setup. Supports indirect network configurations– where the virtual server is connected to a virtual network, which in turn is connected to a physical network adapter.

Virtual server network - Allows the disks of a running virtual server to be cloned to a virtual server. Avoids all driver issues, and reduces the conversion time in some circumstances. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and VMware ESX only.

Leostream Direct - Allows the disks of a running virtual server to be cloned to a virtual server. Avoids all driver issues, and reduces the conversion time in some circumstances.

Windows 2003 Server support - Allows the conversion of Windows 2003 servers.

Limited Dynamic Disk support - Allows the conversion of Windows servers with simple dynamic disks. Asimple dynamic disk is one that does not span multiple drives, and does not use soft RAID. Simple dynamic disks are most commonly created by upgrading an exist Basic disk to Dynamic.

Remote configuration - Allows the setting of the Leostream Converter running within the virtual server from the P>V Wizard.

Automated virtual server reboot - At the end of the Direct conversion process the virtual server will automatically reboot into the converted Windows operating system.

Click through HostAgent warning messages - The P>V Wizard reports any error message generated by the virtualization layer. Many of these messages are warnings rather thanfatal errors. It is now possible to manually correct any problem and then continue the P>V conversion process

Unicode support - Limited support for Unicode characters in the operating system variables of the origin machine.

Acronis True Image Transport Option - Acronis enables disks attached to running servers to be cloned. Partitions can be resized, and unused space is not copied. The Leostream Acronis option prepares the origin machine for Acronis so that after the disks have bee cloned and the Virtual Server restarted, the transplanted OS will boot successfully.

Forced setting of Intel Ethernet Card - Atypically the Intel 10/100 Ethernet card does not always successfully auto negotiate its connection speed, and so the transfer rate is very slow. By picking the forced “Full Duplex” setting the card can be placed in a full speed mode.

Leostream Plus andAdvancedTransport - The Leostream P>V Wizard now has an additional Transport option called “Leostream Plus” that write three floppies instead of one, and then tries to auto detect the hardware. This approach can load the wrong or suboptimum driver, and so “Leostream Advanced” is a more conservative choice. This option requires the user to select the specific drivers, but only requires a single floppy.

Per conversion licensing - The Leostream P>V Wizard is now available as a standalone product as well as a component of the Leostream Virtual Controllermanagement system. In order to broaden the range of situations where it is a cost effective solution Leostream has introduced a per conversion pricing.

Improved NT4 SP6a support - When converting Windows NT4 operating systems it is necessary to copy a number of Microsoft system files from the NT4 SP6a Service Pack. The layout of the Service Pack CD is different from that of the Service Pack download from the Microsoft site. The new version of the Leostream P>V Wizard is able to work with both CDs and downloads.

IBM, HP (Compaq), and Dell SCSI RAID - A number of SCSI RAID adapters such as the IBM ServeRAID and Compaq Smart Array use a non standard disk geometry. The LeostreamP>V Wizard is now able to deal with remapping the disk geometry during the conversion process.

Hidden Partitions - A number of hardware vendors such as HP (Compaq), Dell, and IBM use hidden partitions for system tools. The P>VWizard is able to handle these hidden partitions by disabling them, while leaving them in place.
