Windows 7 Activation Error 0xC004F061 on x86 and x64

OK, so you’ve just got your new Windows7 product DVD, you’ve restarted the computer, installed a fresh copy of Windows but now you get an Activation Error 0xC004F061. This article will explain how to fix the Activation Error 0xC004F061.

Introduction

If you’re frustrated with the 0xC004F061 Windows 7 Activation Error, chances are you’re trying to use an upgrade version of the Windows 7 DVD.  This usually occurs when there wasn’t a previous version of Windows on your computer when Windows 7 was being installed.

In order to install the upgrade version of Windows 7 x86 or x64 on your computer, you must ensure that either a Windows Vista or Windows XP is installed on the computer.  Without the original OS installed on the computer, you will get the Windows 7 Activation Error 0xC004F061.  If your hard disk was already formatted and the previous Operating system is no longer on there, unfortunately you will need to install the old OS back on there.

You won't be able to use the upgrade key to activate Windows 7 x86 or x64.  You have three choices:

  1. Either install a fresh copy of Windows XP or Windows Vista on your computer and then perform the Windows 7 x86 or x64 upgrade; or
  2. Purchase a full version of Windows 7 DVD.  Obviously it is much cheaper to use the upgrade, and a fresh install won’t take that long in any case.
  3. Proceed with the current installation without entering a product key. This will allow you to finalize the install of Windows 7 on the computer; however, you will not be able to activate the product without contacting Microsoft support.

Our recommendation

It is much faster and less expensive to install Windows 7 onto a computer running Windows XP or Vista rather than paying for the full Windows 7 DVD.  Simply use step 1 above to install a fresh copy of Windows XP or Vista onto your computer and then upgrade using your Windows 7 DVD.

Conclusion

This article discussed the Windows 7 Activation Error 0xC004F061 and suggested two ways in which to overcome the problem.  Unfortunately, due to the fact that this activation error is related to an Upgrade version of Windows 7, the options are limited.
